Blackness… slowly our screen begins to fade into the various noises and conversations on a local city bus. The breaks can be heard releasing as the doors open to allow more passengers from the crowded streets to climb aboard the transit. As the men and women enter the bus and walk to their seats the cameras find two men already seated. One is an elderly man, white hair covers his head and glasses sit in front of his eyes. We do not recognize the man as anyone relevant to LOE, thus we assume him to be a stranger, simply taking the bus to get from point A to point B. The man is leaned over and seems to be speaking to his neighboring passenger. Though the man has been classified as a simple commoner, his neighbor is harder to do so with. A hood is drawn over his face, and his head hung low. He seems to be paying little to no attention as this seemingly random stranger begins to speak.
Passenger:
So anyway, I was sitting in my office and trying to get my company’s numbers to add up when one of my co-workers came in and showed me the strangest story in the newspaper. Apparently about two weeks ago six high school kids got off of a ferry near Puget Sound right before it took off because apparently one of them freaked out when she said she had some sort of vision that the ferry was going to crash and they were all going to die. Then in some crazy form of coincidence the ferry sunk and all the passengers aboard were killed, but thanks to that girls freak out the six kids weren’t there like the rest of them, strange right? But that’s not even the weirdest part about it all, apparently one by one, all six of those kids died throughout those two weeks with the last one dying late last night. All the deaths were freak accidents to. Strange stuff huh? And just in time for Halloween, like my friend said, only in Seattle…
After the passenger’s last statement, the hooded man slowly takes out a pair of previously unseen ear phones, placing them on his lap. Shortly thereafter, he reaches up, pulling his hood down, and tilting his head up in a slow, yet fluid motion. The man is identified as the Straight Edge Warrior, Viper. LOE’s new X-Division Champion does not turn to speak to the man beside him, but rather he stares forward, and begins to speak in a somewhat trance-like tone.
Viper:
Death caught up to them…
The passenger gains a look of newfound confusion, twisting his face in a questioned fashion, before finally asking Viper a question.
Passenger:
What was that?
Viper pauses… his look hasn’t changed, his eyes still locked in the front right position, as he speaks once more to his curious passenger.
Viper:
Death… he always wins in the end… it’s like playing chess with a psychic, no matter how sneaky you feel you may be, he’ll always know your next move… When the game is done, you lie cold and unmoving on the ground, while Death leans to whisper in your ear… “Checkmate.”
Viper pauses after his statement, his eyes still set in a frontal view, watching the outside pedestrians as they wiz by due to the buses movement. Just as the man beside him looks to be about to speak up, Viper ends his silence.
Viper:
You know… some people believe that what happened in that tragedy happens the world over, in Peru, Columbia, Africa, China, Russia… many more countries have reported that exact same situation… someone sees their death before it happens, they frantically attempt to warn others, yet only a few of their friends will pay them any mind… Thus, they would all soon perish, save that person and their friends… But even then… as I said before… death always wins… They begin dying from freak accidents… ways that you would only see in a horror movie, or maybe twice in a span of five years… all within a matter of weeks… Some believe it to be a mere coincidence… others believe those visions are because the person who has them is capable of conjuring premonitions, deep within their brain is a trigger that warns them of impending doom, and that the same trigger that saved them, activates a form of supernatural power that begins to pick off the survivors one by one… But then… there are those that believe that vision… that premonition… is from death himself… some feel he makes mistakes every now and then, slipping up and letting his victims see their deaths… but that doesn’t seem right to me… no, I believe death lets them see it on purpose… I believe they are receiving the gift of life, from the grim reaper himself…
The passenger that sits beside the Straight Edge Warrior looks somewhat freaked out, yet fascinated by Viper’s philosophies on this supernatural occurrence. The man finally musters up the courage to ask the still somber, and trance like Viper a question.
Passenger:
So… h-how do you know about all of this?
Viper closes his eyes, inhaling oxygen deeply and holding it, before finally exhaling. He brings his hands up once more, rubbing his eyes, before setting them back in his lap, and opening his eyes once more. The bus passes a one of its many stop, with no one pulling a cord or waiting, the bus simply passes on, picking up its speed.
Viper:
Saturday night, I got a call from my boss… He congratulated for winning the X-Division Championship. We then went over the plans for the Halloween show this week… he told me he had me in mind for the main event, which brought a smile upon my face… He then told me my opponent was to be Raven… I was so ready to prove myself against a true legend of the sport… When the conversation between Tommy and myself was finished… I laid down to sleep… but as I slept, I had a terrible nightmare… I saw myself, my limbs were torn from my body… my head had been decapitated from my body with my face being beaten beyond recognition… and standing there, staring upon the carnage was the man who caused it… Raven stood, arms outstretched… sacrificing me to prove his dominance in the Land of Extreme… I awoke in a cold sweat, unaware that my surroundings were my own hotel room… frightened, I began to research what I had just been through… it felt so real… I found out all I spoke to you about, and began to wonder if death was warning me to stay away from Raven… I began pondering… if Death is giving people the gift of life, then why would he pick off the survivors one by one… is Death doing it for sport… does he want to see how long they can survive while he hunts after them? Or maybe he really is just making the mistake of reaching a victim too early, thus allowing them to see their horrible demise… Or maybe… maybe Death is killing them… because he gave one the gift to survive… and that one person spit in his face, by sharing that gift of life with others… Can any of these be true… is any of this possible…
Just as Viper finishes his statement the bus’ breaks go out. The driver is frantically trying to stop his bus from colliding with the oncoming traffic, but his attempts are all in vain as the bus crashes full speed into a Ford Explorer. The impact of the bus’ first collision causes some people to crash hard, face first into poles, thus ending their lives; this includes the man Viper had just been talking to not one minute before. The collision causes the bus to flip in the air, and land on its next bus stop, the force and crashing kills all civilians contained on the bus, while a rod from the stop spears through the bus’ top, impaling Viper, ending his short lived life. Cameras zoom into the lifeless eyes of the young X-Division Champion, as they are unmoving, until we finally see them blink. The cameras zoom out to reveal Viper still sitting on the bus with his neighboring passenger as they were mere minutes before.
Passenger:
So… h-how do you know about all of this?
Without a word, Viper calmly reaches up and pulls the bus cord. The bus comes to a stop from its slow speed. Viper silently rises from his seat, exiting the bus and leaving behind his short lived friend. We watch as Viper flips his hood back over his head walking down the streets, while our screen fades to black, and the horrific screeching of the bus can be heard…
